Lon Snowden Lands at Sheremetyevo Airport

After months of speculation and false alarms, the father of fugitive U.S. intelligence leaker Edward Snowden arrived in Moscow for a long-awaited meeting with his son.

The plane carrying Lon Snowden arrived at Sheremetyevo airport at 7:50 a.m, television channel Rossia-24 reported.

Lon Snowden did not immediately reply to messages sent to his two personal e-mail accounts Thursday.

Edward Snowden's attorney Anatoly Kucherena, who has served as a communication link between father and son, said Monday that “visas had been granted” for Lon Snowden and other family members but did not specify their travel dates.

The visit has been in the making since Aug. 11, when Lon Snowden announced he had been granted a Russian visa during an appearance on ABC News.

No further developments followed, however, and a source close to the elder Snowden told Itar-Tass on Sept. 4 that the Russian government had not yet provided the authorization necessary for a visit.

In an email to The Moscow Times on Sept. 27, Lon Snowden said that he had called off a planned visit due to security concerns.

Father and son have been in touch only once since Edward Snowden fled the U.S. in fear of prosecution in May, speaking by encrypted video chat on Aug. 15 against the advice of their lawyers, Kucherena told Russian news agencies.

The younger Snowden was granted temporary asylum in Russia on Aug. 1 after nearly six weeks spent sequestered at Sheremetyevo Airport.
